SCHMETZ Serger Needles

SCHMETZ Serger NeedlesConsult your owner’s manual!  Many new sergers use home sewing needle system 130/705 H (flat shank with a scarf). SCHMETZ Stretch, Jersey, Topstitch and Universal are popular needle choices. Some older sergers use needle systems BLX1 and DCX1.

SCHMETZ Overlock Needles

ELx705, ELx705CF and ELx705CF SUK are popular serger needle systems. Check your owner’s manual! Here’s how these needles are different from home sewing needles (130/705 H):

  • Serger needles have a groove on the front and back sides of the blade to reduce skipped stitches.  The second long groove is necessary to create chain stitches like overlock or coverlock stitches.
  • ELx705, ELx705CF and ELx705CF SUK have increased strength due to a reinforced blade leading to less needle breakage and straighter stitches.
  • ELx705 and ELx705CF have a slightly rounded point for universal use.
  • ELx705CF SUK has a medium ball point suitable for many knit fabrics.
  • ELx705CF and ELx705CF SUK have a Chrome Finish (CF), increasing wear resistance.

Check your owner’s manual!  SCHMETZ ELx705, ELx705CF and ELx705CF SUK are used on overlock or coverlock machines.

Splendid Sampler II

Rhonda Pierce Holding SCHMETZ Super Demo NeedleHello dear Splendid Sampler II fans! My name is Rhonda Pierce and I love to sew & quilt. I am spokesperson for SCHMETZ home sewing needles North America. Yes, in this pic, I’m holding a giant needle, the SCHMETZ “Super” demo needle. We travel together when I give SCHMETZ classes. In The Splendid Sampler 2, you will find my block Get To The Point on page 111.

To complete Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson’s sentence, I’m living my best quilting life when… I’m sharing needle facts, and at the same time learning from my awesome creative sewing public. That little 2” piece of steel, the SCHMETZ needle, has provided me with an awesome career and friendships around the world. I am forever grateful. Because of listening to YOU, I pushed SCHMETZ to color code needles by needle type and size. Color bands make needle identification so much easier. No longer do you need to squint to read the size imprinted on the needle shank. Check out the chart below. The upper color band identifies the needle type (left column) and the lower band identifies the SCHMETZ Needles Color Code Chartneedle size (right column). Universal needles have only one band of color to identify size. Feel free to download this handy chart: https://www.schmetzneedles.com/schmetz-color-code-chart/

SCHMETZ Microtex NeedlesMy favorite needle is SCHMETZ Chrome Professional Grade Microtex size 80/12. Using the chart to the right, the top color band is purple for Microtex and the bottom color band is orange. On this project, I first used SCHMETZ Chrome Microtex 80/12, but found the needle a bit heavy, so switched to a smaller needle, size 70/10, lower green. SCHMETZ Chrome Microtex 70/10 and Aurifil are perfect partners with Moda Fabrics.

On this project, what needle type are you using? What size? Popular needle types are Microtex, Quilting and Universal. Popular sizes are 70/10 – 80/12. With SCHMETZ you have options! Post pics of your Get To The Point block on the Splendid Sampler website to be in the running for a SCHMETZ giveaway. Sew SCHMETZ!

Rhonda’s Favorite Quilting Needles

00favoritequiltingneedles

00rhonda-pierceSCHMETZ manufacturers 17 needle types so you have a great choice.  Sometimes technique will dictate  needle choice, other times, the thread or fabric.  I always like to say “it’s a dance between the needle, thread and fabric with YOU and your technique as the leader.”  If one needle is not performing to your expectations, don’t worry, needles don’t have feelings — change to a different needle type or size.  Here are my top four SCHMETZ needle choices for quilting:

• Microtex — For piecing and stippling in sizes 70/10 or 80/12.  The Microtex is my “must have” needle for sewing on batiks and for appliqué. Because this needle has a “very slim acute point” it wears out faster.  I can usually see an inconsistent stitch or hear a click when this needle is ready to be changed.   This needle easily creates a stitch of precision!

• Quilting — The taper of the needle point is more sever, so the sewing experience is a bit different.  Available in two sizes, I use the 75/11 for piecing and the larger size 90/14 for the actual
quilting.

• Topstitch — The extra long eye on this needle is especially helpful when working with heavier, multiple or even aged (poor quality) threads.  There is less friction on the thread passing through
the eye resulting in less shredding and breakage.  I mostly use size 90/14 for quilting.

• Universal — This work horse of a needle works with nearly all fabric types to create a stitch with integrity.  This needle has the widest assortment of sizes from the finest 60/8 to the largest
120/19.  Yes, I have more Universals in my stash than any other needle type.
